Inspired by the Ghanaian flag, Gold Coast '57 was released as a celebration of Ghana's Independence from the United Kingdom on March 6, 1957. Led by Kwame Nkrumah and the other members of “The Big Six”, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence from the UK. Ghana successfully won its freedom after a decade-long campaign of the United Gold Coast Convention between 1947 and 1957. The Ghanaian flag has horizontal stripes of red, gold, and green from top to bottom and in the middle of the flag is the black star. The color red represents the blood of those who died in the country’s struggle for independence. Gold stands for the wealth of minerals in the country. Green symbolizes the rich forest. The star represents the lone star of African freedom and emancipation.
On our first Ghana Independence socks release, we had the honor of collaborating with the talented Afro Music choreographer and dancer, Caleb Bonney -known best by his monicker, Ghana Boii.
